December 2006, 11:09900 B.C. or earlier, writing system discovered A previously unknown writing system, with symbols that tend to look like pineapples, possibly the earliest example from the New World, has been found on a stone block in Veracruz, Mexico. Dating from about 900 B.C. (400 years before writing was considered to have first appeared in the Americas) it seems to be from the ancient Olmec civilization and could even contain poetry!
